Pediatric Aquatic Therapy
Pediatric aquatic therapy helps children build strength, balance, and confidence in a supportive warm-water environment. At Academy Swim Club, licensed pediatric physical therapist Nicol Gohl provides individualized aquatic physical therapy sessions designed to help children improve mobility, coordination, and independence through fun, play-based movement in the water.
What is Pediatric Aquatic Therapy?
Pediatric aquatic therapy is a specialized form of pediatric physical therapy performed in warm water. The aquatic environment provides buoyancy, gentle resistance, and sensory input that support children as they practice important movement skills. This type of aquatic therapy for kids allows children to move more freely while building strength, balance, and coordination in a safe and supportive setting.
Who Benefits from Aquatic Therapy for Kids?
Aquatic therapy for children is especially helpful for kids who experience:
-
Spasticity or muscle tightness
-
Low muscle tone
-
Significant muscle weakness
-
Sensory processing challenges
-
Balance and coordination difficulties
Warm water helps relax tight muscles while buoyancy supports the body, making movement easier and more comfortable. Water therapy for children can help kids practice standing, walking, and balance with less effort and fatigue.
Benefits of Warm Water Therapy
The warm-water environment used during pediatric aquatic therapy provides several unique benefits:
-
Reduced joint stress due to buoyancy
-
Increased muscle relaxation
-
Improved balance and body awareness
-
Gentle resistance to build strength
-
Consistent sensory input that supports regulation
The deep pressure and movement of the water can also help improve sensory processing and body awareness, making aquatic physical therapy both effective and enjoyable.
