Around Water
Drowning is the number one cause of
childhood accidental death under the age of
5 years old in the Western States. We strive
to help drastically reduce these horrible statistics.
Safety for our participants and our instructors
is our number one priority. We emphasize safety
in all aspects of our program. Skills include
jumping in the pool with clothes on and getting
out, unassisted. Once a Quarter is Water Safety
Week, in which we teach water safety and rescue
skills to all students. Our program has had
a great deal of positive feedback from parents
regarding the skills which were learned and
subsequently put to use in emergency situations.
Mandatory Safety Tips - “Layers
of Protection” to insure drowning
prevention.
| 1. |
CONTINUOUS
SUPERVISION -
Never leave your child unattended around
any body of water. |
| |
|
| 2. |
FENCE YOUR
POOL AND SPA -
Fences and approved safety latches help
to buy time if a child is left unattended
for a short period of time. |
| |
|
| 3. |
SWIMMING LESSONS
-
Swimming lessons will buy time if a child
breaks through the primary “layers
of protection” |
| |
|
| 4. |
CPR &
FIRST AID -
Know CPR and First Aid if supervision and
layers of protection are breached. This
knowledge is also helpful for many other
emergency situations. |
In 1998, our own ASAP non-profit (Aquatic Safety
Awareness Program) was implemented to educate
parents and students in an effort to enhance
water safety in and around all bodies of water.
Our instructors visit schools, grades K thru
2, to teach water safety tips while around any
body of water. We also attend the SCV Emergency
Expo and other community functions. Year 2000
was our first annual spring Water Safety Day
Expo, dubbed "April Pools Day" with
many community emergency sectors assisting in
the fight against childhood drownings. Our staff
Educational Director is a member of the National
Drowning Prevention Alliance, the Orange County
Drowning Prevention Network, the Swim for Life
Foundation and Liaisons with the United States
Swim School Association (USSSA) and the World
Aquatic Baby Congress (WABC).
Note:
Please check with your doctor and get his or
her approval before you begin any new fitness
program to be sure it is suited for your needs.
